A Brief History
Dr. Robert Morris is credited with giving a series of lectures for Mason Masons, their wives, widows, sisters and daughters based on lessons and charges originating in Europe in the 18th century. His "Adoptive Degrees" called "THE EASTERN STAR," relating the lessons of "Jephthah’s Daughter, Ruth, Esther, Martha and Electa," were communicated in New York City in April of 1854.
In 1854 Robert Macoy succeeded Morris as leader of this developing organization. Mr. Macoy prepared a Ritual of Eastern Star Degrees and in 1868 it was presented to a group of women in New York City at the formation of Alpha Chapter No. 1. The Oder of the Eastern Star was born and quickly spread throughout the state. Within two years, the Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star of the State of New York was formed. By 1874 there were more than 600 chapters in the U.S. Today, Eastern Star exists around the world.
